Fall 2010
Hello Friends!
For the past couple years, I’ve been blessed to be a part (with Shane Claiborne, Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, and Enuma Orkoro as editors) of a beautiful project called Common Prayer, a mosaic of prayers, liturgies, and songs from communities around the globe. These have been woven into daily offices for morning, noon, and evening prayers in the style of the Book of Common Prayer.
The book will be released in time for Advent. An exciting opportunity presents itself for us to be truly praying together as a broad community of communities–churches, live-in communities, and families. To celebrate this, part of the book’s budget is helping local areas host release parties to give out free copies of Common Prayer (which will sell for about $25).
Holy Grounds at Fairlington Presbyterian Church has offered to host a party for this area. The party will be on Sunday, December 5th at 7 pm @ Fairlington Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, VA. Because there will be a limited number of free copies, if you want to be in the lottery for a free copy, we’ll need you to register here: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/1001781355. At the party, we’ll have the opportunity for different churches and communities to connect and for us to pray and sing some of the prayers together.
To whet your appetite, check out www.commonprayer.net and download the free PDF sample. The book is a work of art in itself–our prayer together will enrich and enliven the tapestry and hopefully draw us closer to one another and God. I hope to see many of you in December!
Summer News:
Thanks to all who participated in Converge! We had a great day hanging out, listening to seminars from various leaders in the D.C. Area, playing music, and much more!
There will not be an August Prayer and Share due to vacations and some communities in transition with new roommates and such. Look for a potluck/get together sometime this month, and then our normal prayer and share again starting next month.
News as of May 2010
Prayer and share is now the 1st Tuesday of the month.
Our C of C retreat will hopefully be in June, perhaps the weekend of the 25th.
We are exploring the possibility of having a summer gathering, gathering communities from the immediate region for a day of seminars and speakers and music. This would hopefully also feature the new documentary, Return to El Salvador, a film by Jamie Moffitt from the Simple Way.
News from Dec. Prayer and Share
Dates: As much as possible, Prayer and Share will now be held on the 1st Tuesday each month (the next gathering will be January 26th)-Communities interested in hosting should try to keep it on this day each month.
Content: We decided that from now on, our gatherings will be 1 part community prayers and announcements (what we’ve been doing so far) and 1 part discussion/interaction/
teaching/sharing. This might look different each month, but the consensus was having some sort of topical discussion or sharing.
If there are other topics that you would find interesting and would like to hear from other people about, send me your ideas (ex. conflict, roommate discernment, sexuality, etc). We’re trying to create a “menu” of topics to make it easy each month to decide what to discuss. This also could open us up to the possibility of occasionally having outside speakers lead us in discussion or share with us.
Conspire Magazine: Currently, DC Community of Communities is a co-Conspirator for this magazine through the Simple Way. We decided not to renew our subscription after the 4th issue, as the cost seems too great. Instead, I will be trying to coordinate getting a handful of copies from Schools for Conversion each quarter to distribute at meetings and to communities. The cost will be $3/issue, so you or your community will be able to decide how many copies you’d like and just pay for them that way.
Retreat: We hope to have a retreat in June at St. Anselm’s Abbey in NE D.C.
